Portabello Soup

I gave the Seniors Photo Club an assignment to try producing a "Fine Art" photo. That is a photo that has no other purpose but to just be beautiful, not sure if this qualifies but it is my entry. I put these things in my black box with only ambient light, but must admit to using a flashlight to sweep light across the items, f/22, 20 seconds, Manual mode, 5600K, ISO 100. LYLE

Creek

After talking today I decided to look at the photos I told you about. They were shot mid afternoon looking toward the sun so I just had to post them to do the assignment for your class. I'm not real happy with the 2nd one I worked on it a long time and discarded most of what I did. I ended up just settling for what I posted.

Sunrays

About 4 years ago Judi and I went with some friends to the Grand Canyon, actually we were there on my birthday. I had not really liked this shot much but after looking at again and working on it in ON1 Photo RAW and getting the crop right I changed my mind. LYLE

Bonnie

Bonnie on the piano. I gave an assignment to my class to take pictures of peoples hands. I called it "I'll Hand It To You". The challenge was to shoot the photos without flash using shutter priority and changing the settings of the exposure triangle to get the correct exposure. LYLE

Dutchman's Arch

A couple of friends and I went to the San Rafael Swell area in central Utah looking for this arch. It took a bunch to find it but this is it. It can be seen from I-70 about 100 miles west of Grand Junction, CO but I had never noticed it until I visited it. We had to wander around in the desert driving on trails that were so deep into the soft sand that I couldn't even open the doors on my truck. We accessed it by driving through a culvert under the freeway with about 6" clearance on each side of my mirrors, one of which I ripped off when I hit a tree with it later that evening. But we sure had lots of fun. LYLE

The Prospector

This old prospector stopped to ask for directions but I couldn't help him none cause I wasn't from those parts. We shared some victuals and swapped a few stories with him. Last I saw of him he was headed west into those hills in the distance. LYLE

Sunset on the Swell

We were camped just to the left of this area. It took us a bit to find the right camping spot on the San Rafael Swell but this was as pretty as we could find. I was standing on the edge of a 300' cliff with a very lovely valley stretching out to the west with snow caps in the distance. It just doesn't get much better than this. LYLE

Looking North East

This is a view looking north east from Maui. Judi liked this scene, as did I and wanted it for a memory so I grabbed my camera. I intend to hang this in our bathroom over her tub so we will see it every day. LYLE

Rocky Splash

I had woke up at 9:30 (UT time) while in Maui, that would be 4:30 there and just couldn't get back to sleep so I grabbed my camera and swim suit and went for a walk along the beach. With my suit in my camera bag and the camera around my neck (I usually feel naked without the camera) I sat on the steps leading to the beach, set the camera for 5 sec shutter with the flash on and set to rear curtain sync. I had to time the shutter to press it 5 sec before the splash happened to get both a good exposure on the sand and rocks and freeze the splash. Such fun. LYLE

Sunset at Monkey Pod Tree

This is a Monkey Pod tree, at least that is what the locals called them. I just loved the way they hung out over the ocean and became a silhouette at sunset. Judi and Connie had to wait while Richard and I shot throughout the sunset. They were patient with us and both really like the photos we captured. LYLE

Sunset on Maui

This sunset is on the island of Maui. Judi and I were there just a few weeks ago. I saw some photos printed on aluminum in a couple galleries in Lahaina as we were there to eat. I had seen the location earlier in the day and knew I wanted to try to get back there to shoot them. I just had to wait until sunset. LYLE

Austin Skyline

I finely made it down town, Joan came for a visit and wanted to see town town Austin so I grabbed m camera the first day with good weather even though it was cloudy. this shot was off of a trail along Lady Bird Lake. There wasn't very much color I did convert it to B&W and then ajusted it to leave a little color you can see it on the 1st building an the left.Removing all the color made it too flat.

Grape Splash over Black Rawhide

In this shot, like the next one, I dropped some grapes in the glass to create a splash. I set the camera at f/22, WB 7500K, ISO 100, 2 sec, and manual mode. I dropped the grapes and triggered the flash while Judi squeezed the shot off. All this on our dining room table, but trying to contain the mess in a cookie sheet. That was a lot of fun. LYLE

The Grapes of Splash

This is a goblet that I bought from a second hand store for $1.00, I have sure had fun with it. I filled it about 3/4 full of water and dropped a small cluster of grapes into it. Just as the grapes made the splash I triggered the flash to stop the splash. Other light came from a flashlight that I got free from Harbor Freight Tools. LYLE

Seniors Class Projects

These photos were taken during a class that I teach at the Taylorsville Senior Center. I have 8 students, all seniors (60 years old or older). We have a great time and even shoot some fun stuff. LYLE

Willow Pond Panorama

I just got a new (old) lens and this is the first time trying it. It is a Nikon 28mm PC manual lens. It is like a Lens Baby except it only shifts. It is to provide perspective correction so all lines are straight and true. It works great for pano's as you can see. There was no warping in the stitch at all. This is 3 shots and brightened up a bit in On1. LYLE
