Mountain Side Watercolor

I was looking at some older exposures and decided to try and save this one, the tree in the foreground was a good exposure but the mountain was way under exposed. I made a 3 exposure HDR then in Layers adjusted exposure, curves, selective colors, photofilters (cyan35%), Posturize (Level 14) Vibrance (Vibrance-37 saturation +77) then went to photoscape and made it a Watercolor. Profile of a Tree

I took this shot about a year ago but never liked it. I couldn't bring myself to delete the images so I just decided to process them. I used Photomatix 4.02 (Thanks Tom) then opened it in CS4 and put a dark edge on it. After that I opened it in Photoscape and put a vignette on it and used the reflection filter. Back to CS4 to give it a ripple effect in the 'water' and a blue hue with the rectangular marquee tool. I cropped it to get rid of most of the dark edge but that allowed me to enhance the 'shore line'. After all of that I was finally willing to share it. LYLE

Waterfall Antiqued and framed

I finely figured out how to change this photo edited in photoscape to a Jpeg so I could post it. I used antique 2 and 7 and then Film effect Velvia on high then added 2 boarders to look like it was matted and a frame. The first time I shared this with you was in September labeled Utah Waterfall it is a 3 exposure HDR. Bruce

The Nativity

This nativity stands beside the tabernacle on Temple Square. I shot it at noon today and processed it with Photomatix, Photoscape and Photo shop but did not modify the colors in the area of the figures. I wanted to make the rest of it dark so it would look like I shot it at night. I used the rectangular marquee tool to select the inner area then feathered it and selected the inverse. After all that I turned the saturation and contrast down to darken it then added a vignette in black to it. LYLE

Two Stained Glass Windows

This is yet another look at the Washington National Cathedral in DC. It is a 5 shot HDR and until I learned how to make the settings for this series of photos I just didn't like any of them. I also opened this one in Photoscape and added a vignette filter to darken the corners which helps to focus the eye on the column cap. I really like the way the light colors the columns and window jambs. LYLE

Olde Photo

I have had this old photo laying around for a long time getting scuffed up and tattered. I finally decided to use it just so it wouldn't get completly destroyed. It is a 5 shot HDR, tonemapped in Photomatix and then 'antiqued' in Photoscape. I am enjoying this new program. LYLE

View from 13th West

This is another one that I had posted earlier and reworked in Photoscape. I also used a watercolor pencil filter to get it to look like this. I opened it in CS4 and selected the 'water' area with the lasso tool and used a filter to give it a ripple texture. Even Judi likes this one. View From My Street

Do you remember driving down the street to the east from where I live? Do you also remember the beautiful lake that fills much of the Salt Lake valley? It is a remnant of Lake Bonneville. Oh, you don't remember any of this? Just picked up a new download from the internet called "PhotoScape 3.5". It is a free download and has some pretty neat features. I would recommend it. LYLE

Canadian Castle

Okay, I know, it didn't look like this, Oh well, I am having fun. I actually took a single .jpg and saved it 4 times and modified each photo to get it this way and then did a bunch to the tonemapped version in CS4. I shot it with my D40 at f/7, 1/200 sec, ISO 200 at 23 mm using a 18-55 lens. Yes, that is Judi on the front porch (sorry, rules you know). LYLE

Utah Lake Panorama

I was out shooting with the boys (guns) and turned around and this was laying behind me. I didn't have my tripod so I just shot away. It is a 5 shot HDR, 3 panels wide. I processed it in Photomatix first and then stiched them together with Serif Panorama. I bumped up the black just a bit to get some definition but tried to keep it realistic. LYLE

Texas Hill Country

This is a 2 shot panorama because the third one didn't turnout where I could use it. I played with it so much I don't even know what I did. I shot this from the deer stand Saturday morning. Bruce

Stairway in Charcoal

Another look at a house in Georgetown, VA. This 5 shot HDR was okay in color but was too busy, after turning it B&W I layed a white layer mask over a charcoal filter and used a ragged eraser tool to bring back the image. I set the opacity at 90% just to see the background a bit on the edges and then applied a gaussian blur at 4% to the entire image. LYLE

Red Brick House

While visiting Danelle in Washington, DC we went to Georgetown to look at some of the great old houses that were built in the 1800's. I didn't use my tripod but shot 5 capture HDR's anyway. This is one of them. I did modify it slightly in Photoshop after tonemapping it with Photomatix. I just didn't really care much for it until the slight modifications were applied. I didn't like the first try so I redid the whole thing, it is the one on the top. I like it better. LYLE

This shot turned out better than I hoped for. I was shooting when the other deer started jumping out of the fence enclosure. I decided to try and catch this 4 point jump out. f5.6 1/50 sec ISO 1250 Bruce

8 Point Buck

I know you would call this a 4 point. I got in my blind and just finished setting up making all kind of noise and looked up and could just make this out in the early morning light. I couldn't believe he didn't get spooked by my noise. I shot several exposures but most of them he moved and I can't tell what he is in the pictures. I couldn'd shoot a Buck with my gun so I had to use my camera. I was a guest on Jeffs hunting lease and was limited to what I could shot by the lease rules he had already shot a Buck. f5.6 4 sec (early morning) ISO 400 Bruce

Sunrise Alamo Ranch

I got up Sunday morning and went to the deer blind and this is what I saw. I set up my tripod and shot a few shots before getting in the blind. the top photo has very little adjustment, f3.8 1.8 sec ISO 400

Blue Aura

When I took this photo I had great hopes for it. I knew it was a nice composition but I just could not process it to save the color. I tried it three different times and failed each time. I looked at it again today,I turned up the black prior to processing it and it came out like this. This is how I remembered it. LYLE

Parts for Sale

While at Heritage Park we were talking to a couple of guys in the merchantile store and I shot a couple of photos. This was a three shot HDR but I didn't particularly like it so I have ingnored it all this time. It had a thermostat right in the middle of it that just didn't fit. I clone stamped it out, darkened and used a gaussian blur on the edge and actually enjoyed it. LYLE

Log Cabin

I was going through some of the photos I took while you were here and enjoying the journey when I noticed that I had not processed this 5 shot look at a log cabin in Heritage Park. I also thought you were probably getting tired of Zions so I decided to post this one. It was nice in color. But after tonemapping it I bumped up all of the colors (typical?), turned it black and white and quite liked the result. LYLE

NICE Camera

I was going to try to convince you that I had picked up a new camera but I knew you wouldn't believe me. I just couldn't help myself when I saw this just sitting there. What a nice camera. I would like to compare his shots to mine.

Sunrise over Big Bend at Zions

This HDR includes a shot of Norm taking a shot right down the river. I stood on the bank and got the sun just as it peaked over the Great White Throne. It was tough to keep from loosing all of the color in this shot. I am not sure if the clouds are lens flare or actually a cloud. The zero step was shot at 1/20 sec, f/8, ISO 100, 10 mm with the 10-24 wide angle and +.7 exposure value. I processed it with the painterly setting and then modified it in CS4 to bump up the color just a bit. I actually tried to use a little restraint on this one. LYLE

Christmas Tree ?

I decided to play around in Photoshop to relax I have been working long hours. I was trying to make the leafs standout in the pine tree limbs and got carried away. . The result reminded me of a Christmas Tree. Bruce

Dead Tree at Big Bend

This is a scene in Zions National Park at a place called The Big Bend due to a big bend in the river as it goes around these rock formations. There must be some really big water flows here at certain times of the year. This is a 5 shot HDR that I massaged some in Photoshop to get it to be vibrant enough for me. LYLE

Curvacious Color-Natural

Along with the next photo these are the same scene, this one processed using the 'natural' setting in Photomatix Pro 3.2. I think it is very nice and just the way it looked, but study the next one. LYLE

Curvacious Color

I am learning that I need to shoot HDRs way underexposed to get the color that I really like. This is just another view of the falls at the Emerald Pools in Zions. Now I know that this scene does not look like this in reality, I also know it is responsible for giving HDR a bad rap, but I happen to like it. LYLE

Rainbow Rock

I can't even begin to say what I have done to this photo except that it is very modified to get the colors the way I wanted them. Isn't it fun being an artist? I shot this with my wide angle lens as an HDR then tonemapped it in 'Grunge' mode but even modified that setting. The blacks wanted to be purple so I modified it with selective colors. LYLE

The Valley of the Virgins

I shot this scene a year ago with a 36 capture HDR panorama and really liked it. This year when I was there I shot it with my 10-24 wide angle lens and liked it almost as much but since I already have a nice shot of it I decided to play a bit with it. When I turned it to B&W it jumped off the screen for me. This is a 5 shot HDR, tonemapped 'grunge' prior to going B&W. Ansel would be proud. LYLE

Light Painting on a Mountain

While returning from 'light painting' on some dead trees we spotted this scene. A road crew was working on a stretch of highway across from this mountain. Their lights lit up this mountainside. Just as I opened up my lens for a 30 second capture a pickup pulled in and lit up the foreground with its headlights. At first I was upset but when I saw the results I was thrilled. This is a once in a lifetime shot that simply could not be repeated. LYLE

Fall has Arived

The leafs are starting to turn down here but I have been too busy to really take advantage of the beauty of fall. I stopped on the side of a small road set up and shot a few exposures but the wind was blowing so I couldn't shoot HDR. I thought the yellow would make the picture more interesting, I guess it did because without it I wouldn't have tried to save it. I cropped it top and bottom and used curvers filter to bring out the colors a little bit and lightened it. 1/125 sec, f29, Iso 320, 52mm. Bruce

The Curved Wall

This is a view of the overhang at Emerald Pools. I really like the way HDR brings out the colors and allows a view into the shadows. LYLE

Virgin River

This is the river that is largly responsible for Zions National Park. I shot this as the -.7 shot of a HDR series but didn't like the way it tonemapped. The mountain peak in the background is called Mt. Jacob, it is one of 3 peaks refered to as The Patriarchs, Mt Abraham, Mt Isaac and Mt Jacob. Most of the features in the park are named after figures in the scriptures. LYLE

The Thermos Bottle

These shots are all from the same series, the first one is the 0 step of a 5 shot HDR, the second one has been tonemapped using Photomatix, the third one was further processed in CS4 using a filter for a woodcut look. The original one is quite nice all by itself while the two processed ones take on a life of their own, but still quite nice. LYLE

Painted Landscape

This HDR was tonemapped and then I used a filter for an oil painting effect. I sort of like the way it came out. It is a scene in Zions National Park. Sometimes it is fun to really mess with a photo. LYLE

Gotta Buck?

This little 2 point was only about 10 feet from me and completely unconcerned about my presence. We finally tossed a small rock in the grass just to get his attention, when he did I got this shot. LYLE

The Painted Tree

I read an article on painting an item with light when it was totally dark outside so decided to try it while I was in Zions National Park. There was no moon out and it was about 10:30 at night so we tried it. We had about 4 flashlights with us including a million candle power flood light. I don't think it was used on this shot. I set the shutter at 30 sec., f4.5, ISO 100 and fired away. You can see the movement of the stars in the background (I know that it is actually the Earth that is moving). It would be hard to find three grown guys, all ready for retirement, running around in the dark laughing like we were that night. LYLE

Craggy Peaks of Zion

This is the range of mountains that greet you as you enter Zions National Park from the southwest. I shot this as an HDR, processed it in 'painterly' and then took the micro-contrast to 100%. Initally the mountains had some color and detail in them but they looked strange until I moved the micro-contrast. I shot it right at sunset so the clouds were beautiful pink. There is actually a hole through the peaks that appear to be an arch on the right side. LYLE
